On Wednesday, 7th. September we assembled in the fishing village of Beer to celebrate the Exaltation to the 4th. Degree of Bro. Vic Petty KOM. In excess of 50 Brothers attended the Ceremony, ably conducted by Bro. Dave Roberts ROH. ROH President No. 15, Exeter Province.

Support was forthcoming from the Excelsior Lodge, Taunton Province, Capstone Loge, North Devon,

Ye Rose of Devon, Ye Exmouth, Otterford, Culm Valley, Exe Valley and Oketon Lodges from the Exeter Province, and from Bridport in Dorset. Exeter PGL, Exeter Knights Chapter No 21 and Exeter ROH Assembly No. 15 were well represented.

We were told by the Sponsors of Bro. Vic of his dedication and an example was attending Lodge all the way from Bridport, where he lives, and even through the heavy winter snow so as not to disappoint ladies of the Lodge on one occasion in particular.

The food was exceptional as usual, their very famous crab sandwiches and a whole salmon in all its glory were great attractions and the tables were loaded.

It was, as usual, first time visitors to the Rattenbury Lodge in Beer were caught out by the very lusty rendition of “Eternal Father, Strong To Save”, that this seaside Lodge always sing in full after the “Absent Brethren Toast”.

The writer was caught out himself many years ago on his first visit when asked to play the “Absent Brethren Toast” and had to think back to his choirboy days very quickly to accompany them.

As a point of interest, the Lodge takes it name from the district named after the infamous smuggler

Dick Rattenbury deep in the past.

Brothers in the Order may not have known that Brother Ron (“Oz” Taylor) was a World Class Darts player having taken part in the News of the World championship in England and well known in the U.S.A. having played all over that country in such places as Las Vegas. Also present were Brother Dave Taylor KOM, his younger Brother. It was a pleasure to see so many Brothers turn out as the Exeter Province ranges from different points of the compass of Devonshire in some cases up to 50 miles between Lodges. He is still highly in demand in State teams but insists that he has now retired.
